Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat mitral valve stenosis, a condition in which the mitral valve becomes narrowed, restricting blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle. During the procedure, a catheter with a deflated balloon is inserted through a vein, usually in the groin, and guided to the heart. Once positioned within the narrowed mitral valve, the balloon is inflated to widen the valve opening, improving blood flow and reducing symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue. BMV is a preferred alternative to open-heart surgery for suitable candidates, offering quicker recovery and lower risks of complications.
